Bits of Polish

Adverbs are those handy little words you can use to give details about how something is done – in what manner, how long, etc. They’re pretty easy to use since, unlike almost everything else in Polish, they don’t inflect. Today we’ll look at some of the answers that answer questions: when? and how often?

Kiedy? When?

dawno – for a long time ago, for ages
Dawno się nie widzieliśmy!
We haven’t seen each other for ages!

dzisiaj – today
Dzisiaj muszę wykąpać kota.
I have to bathe the cat today.

jutro – tomorrow
Jutro mam egzamin z polskiego.
I have a Polish exam tomorrow.

niedługo – shortly
Niedługo znów się spotkamy.
We’ll meet again shortly.

pojutrze – the day after tomorrow
Pojutrze jedziemy na wycieczkę.
The day after tomorrow we’re going on a trip

przedwczoraj – the day before yesterday
Przedwczoraj upiekliśmy sto ciastek.
The day before yesterday we baked a hundred cookies.

teraz – now
Nie czuję się teraz zbyt dobrze.
I’m not feeling too well now.

wcześnie – early
Chcę wstać wcześnie i pouczyć się polskiego.
I want to get up early and study some Polish.

wczoraj – yesterday
Wczoraj pogoda była piękna.
Yesterday, the weather was beautiful.

wrótce – soon
Wkrótce zostanę matką.
I’ll soon become a mother.

wtedy – then
Mieszkaliśmy wtedy w Polsce.
We lived then in Poland

Jak często? How often?

ciągle – constantly
Dlaczego ciągle przeklinasz?
Why are you constantly swearing?

codziennie – every day
Codziennie uczę się kilku nowych słówek.
I learn a few new words every day.

czasem – sometimes
Czasem dodaję mleko do kawy.
I sometimes add milk to coffee.

często – often
Często spotykam się z przyjaciółmi.
I often meet my friends.

nigdy – never
Nigdy nie widzieliśmy tak wielkiego kota.
We’ve never seen such a huge cat.

regularnie – regularly
Regularnie ćwiczę i chodzę na basen.
I regularly exercise and go to the swimming pool

rzadko – rarely
Rzadko odwiedzam moją babcię.
I rarely visit my grandma.

zawsze – always
Zawsze karmię kota po powrocie z pracy.
I always feed the cat after coming back from work.
