Bits of Polish

There are some Polish words whose meaning is pretty easy to guess – demokracja, matematyka, komputer, telewizja… It might be easy to get in a rut and assume that every word that sounds more or less like an English one must mean the same. In fact, there are plenty of so-called false friends – Polish-English word pairs that look similar enough, but have quite different meaning. They are a source of confusion for learners of Polish and English alike, so let’s get to know some of them.

1. lektura - a read, also: a book on a school reading list
Jej nowa książka okazała się ciekawą lekturą.
Her new book turned out an interesting read.
Ta książka to lektura obowiązkowa dla studentów historii.
This book is a compulsory reading for history students.

lecture - wykład
Studenci słuchają wykładu z filozofii.
The students are listening to a philosophy lecture

2. patetyczny - pompous, grandiloquent
Jego patetyczy ton był żałosny.
His pompous tone was pathetic.

pathetic - żałosny
Twoje błagania są żałosne.
Your pleas are pathetic.

3. pasta - paste
Skończyła mi się pasta do zębów.
I’ve run out of toothpaste.

pasta - makaron
There’s pasta for dinner.
Na obiad jest makaron.

4. aktualny - current
Aktualna sytuacja polityczna jest interesująca.
The current political situation is interesting.

actual - rzeczywisty, faktyczny
Jaki jest rzeczywisty powód jej zachowania?
What’s the actual reason of her behavior?

5. dres - tracksuit
W domu mam na sobie wygodny dres.
At home I’m wearing a comfortable tracksuit.

dress - sukienka
Podoba mi się ta krótka, czerwona sukienka.
I like this short, red dress.

6. ordynarny - vulgar
Co za ordynarne słownictwo!
What a vulgar vocabulary!

ordinary - zwyczajny
Była zwyczajną kobietą.
She was an ordinary woman.

7. fabryka - factory
Ta fabryka zatrudnia pięćset osób.
This factory employs five hundred people.

fabric - tkanina
Jedwab to delikatna tkanina.
Silk is a delicate fabric.

8. klej - glue
Muszę kupić dobry klej do drewna.
I need to buy a good wood glue.

clay - glina
Ten wazon jest z gliny.
This vase is from clay.

9. pensja - salary
Moja pensja jest bardzo wysoka.
My salary is very high.

pension - emerytura
Moja matka jest na emeryturze.
My mother lives on pension.

10. prezerwatywa - condom
Prezerwatywa to dobry środek antykoncepcyjny.
A condom is a good contraceptive.

preservative - konserwant, środek konserwujący
Ten sok jest smaczny i bez konserwantów.
This juice is tasty and without preservatives.
